Comprehensive Energy Audits
The process of making a home more efficient, comfortable and environmentally friendly should begin with a Comprehensive Energy Audit. An audit report (verbal or written) will provide a “roadmap” of actions that can be taken and approximate payback periods. An audit allows us to get a picture of how a house is functioning as a whole -and where we will get the most bang for the improvement buck.
A comprehensive audit differs from a free audit in its scope. It goes beyond visual inspections using specialized equipment and comprehensive reports. It looks at how the home is functioning as a whole and provides a “holistic” approach to fixing its energy problems. An audit takes between 2 and 4 hours to complete and includes a verbal report. We recommend that the homeowner accompany the Auditor to take notes.
A comprehensive audit includes a Blower Door test (indirectly measures duct leakage by pressurizing the entire house to a standard testing pressure), Smoke Tracer test (identifies openings), Thermal imaging (infrared pictures), Combustion appliance zone test, Insulation inspection and a Complete visual inspection.
A Duct Blaster test can be performed for an additional charge. A Duct Blaster is used to directly pressure test the duct system for air leaks, similar to the way a plumber pressure tests water pipes for leaks.
A written report is available for an additional charge and includes a HERS score used to rank the efficiency of the home. This report is extensive and requires an average of additional 1 to 2 hours to complete. The end result will provide customers with a breakdown to the financial aspects and benefits of having an efficient home and the pay-back period. A HERS score is extremely beneficial for people who are planning to sell their home.
